Common opener symptoms
- Remote or wall button does nothing; opener has power light / no light
- Door starts then reverses (often photo-eye sensors misaligned or dirty)
- Motor runs / hums but trolley doesn’t move (gear, capacitor, or broken chain/belt)
- Door opens but won’t close, or closes only when you hold the wall button
- Intermittent operation in heat — common complaint on older units in Texas summers
Austin Reddit has Genie-specific ask threads; brands we see mentioned locally include Genie, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and others. Brand alone doesn’t tell you whether to repair or replace.
Repair vs replace (decision frame)
We don’t invent a cutoff price. Use this operator checklist with any shop:
- Favor repair when the opener is relatively young, one part failed (sensors, remote logic, capacitor, gear), and safety features still meet current expectations.
- Favor replace when the unit is old (often discussed as 10–15+ years in industry guides), has multiple failing parts, lacks modern auto-reverse / sensor behavior, or the repair quote approaches a large share of a new install.
- Watch for upsell from “sensors need cleaning” straight to “you need a whole new door.” Ask them to fix the opener path first unless the door panels or tracks are actually damaged.

Public vendor and consumer guides (not Local Garage Door List measurements) commonly put:
- Opener repair (parts + labor for common fixes) in a roughly low-to-mid hundreds range in Texas marketing pages — e.g. Pros On Call and similar “opener repair” pages quote banded repair pricing; treat as marketing, get your own number.
- Full opener replacement / install often cited nationally / regionally from several hundred dollars into the low thousands depending on belt vs chain, horsepower, smart features, and labor (Consumer Affairs and local shop install pages vary widely).
We are not quoting your job. Ask for a price before work. If the tech won’t give a clear number for the specific fix, hang up and call another local shop.
Safe DIY vs call a pro
- Often OK to try: replace batteries in remotes; wipe photo-eye lenses; check that sensors face each other and lights are steady; confirm the emergency release isn’t pulled; reset breaker.
- Call a pro: anything involving springs, cables, track alignment under load, opening the opener gearbox, or wiring you’re unsure about.
Questions for the tech
- Is the door balanced (springs OK) before you blame the opener?
- What exact part failed, and what’s the all-in repair price?
- If replacing the opener: brand/model options, warranty, and whether my remotes/keypads are included?
- Are you locally owned?
